Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening in Kathmandu, 48 People Test HPV Positive

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – The Kathmandu Metropolitan City, in collaboration with Shree Harsha Hospital, began free screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer from the 12th of Chait (March 25). As of the results up until the 18th of Chait, 48 women have tested positive for HPV (Human Papillomavirus) DNA.

The Metropolitan City has registered the names of 846 women for testing by the 25th of Chait. Of these, 613 women have already undergone cancer screening.

Among the women who were tested, 144 underwent mammography, which included women with a family history of breast cancer, those who had previously tested positive but had only recently come into contact, and those who required further examination based on the new tests.

Additionally, 22 women were identified with gynecological and obstetric issues, and initial treatment will be provided by the 12th of Baisakh (April 25, 2025).

This is the second phase of the screening campaign organized by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City. The first phase began on the 3rd of Baisakh (April 16, 2024) and was conducted for a month across various wards.

In the first phase, 8,145 women underwent cancer screenings, with 6,624 of them receiving HPV DNA testing. According to the Metropolitan City, 453 women were found to be HPV positive during the first phase of testing.
