Air Pollution Decreases in Kathmandu Valley, Rain Brings Some Relief

Nepal Health News, Kathmandu – After nearly three weeks of high air pollution levels, Kathmandu Valley has seen some improvement on Thursday. Due to rainfall in various parts of the country, air quality has shown a positive change.

As of Thursday morning at 11:30 AM, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in different areas of Kathmandu Valley was recorded below 140, whereas on Wednesday, it had reached between 150 and 180 at its peak.

In particular, the AQI at Shankhapark and Ratnapark has dropped to 136 and 127, respectively. Similarly, the AQI in Khumaltar and Bhaisipati in Lalitpur has decreased to 85 and 90, respectively. The AQI in Bhaktapur has also improved to 90.

Other regions of the country have also witnessed improvements in air quality. In places like Ilam, Bharatpur, Deukhuri, and Dhangadhi, the AQI has been recorded below 100. However, Pokhara remains the most polluted city on Thursday, with an AQI reading of 156.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an AQI level of 101-150 is considered unhealthy for children, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses. An AQI of 151-200 affects everyone, while levels between 201-300 are deemed very unhealthy, and anything above 300 is classified as hazardous.

Experts are monitoring whether this improvement in air pollution will last or if it will rise again after the rainfall. Citizens are advised to remain cautious and take necessary precautions for their health.
